Software Test Engineer required, Cambridge, £25k p.a.
Who we're looking for
A test engineer with some commercial experience in a QA, release or software testing role. Initially the role will primarily involve learning our configurable software system and manually testing it. You should have knowledge of programming and testing as we want you to be responsible for automating the existing manual tests.
Who we are
Comply Serve is a young company writing and selling ComplyPro2, a multi-user hierarchical database that is configurable so that data sharing applications can be created. It is available to users over the internet via Citrix. Our software is mainly used by the rail industry to help them organise large projects. Crossrail are a recent customer.
What you will be doing
You'll be working primarily as a test engineer:
• Quickly learning and understanding how ComplyPro2 works. Learn how to configure the system. Learning and understanding how to use the IBM Doors system. Create your own test installations of the system. Understanding new features as the development team develop them.
• Manual testing. Ensure that software features fully address the requirements. Devising new manual tests. Thinking of both the straight-forward test cases and the tricky test cases that the software development team might not have thought of. Performing existing manual tests.
• Automated testing. Investigate methods for automating tests. Writing the automated test scripts.
• Testing documentation. Reviewing documentation. Test that documentation is consistent with the software.
• Investigating software problems. Putting together test cases to re-create the problem.
• Communicate effectively with development team, support team and consultants - when gathering information about a software issue, narrowing the cause, creating a test-case that can simply re-produce the problem, reporting problems to the development team.
• Providing the development team with feedback about the usability of the system.
We have a small development office, so flexibility with the role is required. Other potential tasks include:
• Using ComplyPro2 for bug tracking and planning.
• Configuring and updating ComplyPro2 demonstration installations. Talking to the sales-force to understand their requirements. Ensuring that the demonstration installations are updated to show new features as the development team add them to the system.
• You'll be working in a fun and stimulating environment.
• You will be based in the Cambridge office nearly all the time - but you might have the occasional trip to see customers (mainly in London) or to our head office in Birmingham for meetings.
• Making the tea (when it's your turn).
What are you like?
• You are keen to learn new things.
• You have a good attention to detail and a methodical, logical approach.
• You have good communication skills.
• You are comfortable standing around a white-board, sketching out ideas with the development team.
• You will be able to cope with an environment where the software is new, where features are often not fully documented and where priorities can change rapidly. There will be times when you will need to try and figure out how something works by yourself (but hopefully, this won't happen too often).
What you have done
• You have a numerate degree.
• You have experience as a test engineer with some commercial experience in a QA, release or software testing role.
• You have experience of automating tests.
• You have some experience of programming.
• If you don't have exactly this profile - but feel you could learn quickly then that might work too.
Where we are
We work in a small, slightly shabby, basement office (with windows) in a great location 'overlooking' Parker's Piece in the centre of Cambridge.
Tools we use
IBM Rational Doors, Java, Windows Server 2003, Citrix, Open Office.
What are we like
• We are enthusiastic about what we are doing.
• We are a small company so you will need to be flexible.
• We are low on ceremony and informal but we care about what we are doing.
• We are, of course, not perfect but we are always trying to create the best software we can.
What we are offering
• Salary is £25,000 per year.
• Flexible hours.
• 25 days holiday.
• Cycle to work scheme (you can buy a bike, tax free).
• Childcare vouchers.
• No car parking.
