Key Points

Requirements - why bother?

An introduction covering the definition of a requirement, Stakeholder and System requirements and the importance of communicating the system needs.

System Life Cycle

Looking at where requirements fit and are used in the System Life Cycle. We cover the levels of requirements, line of sight and the cost of errors.

Needs and Solutions

We cover the difference between stakeholder needs and system solutions.

Generic Requirements Analysis Process

In this section we discuss best practice and a generic requirements analysis process. We look at all steps in the process including optioneering and verification. We consider process iteration, requirement baselines, configuration control and change management. We look at interfaces to assumptions and risk.

Functional Analysis

Functional Analysis is a requirements development technique that reduces a complex problem into simple functional states. We use functional analysis to create a functional breakdown structure (FBS) which provides a visual media for communicating the system needs. The FBS sets the boundary and scope of the system.

Requirement Definition

We look at the different types of requirements including performance, constraints and interfaces. We cover the structure of the requirement statement and additional attributes. We consider techniques for requirement development and pitfalls to avoid. By the end of this section you will be able to identify good and bad requirements.
